Jute the ‘Golden Fibre’

What is Jute?

Jute starts life as the fibrous inner bark located on the stalk of the huge tropical herb Cochorus. It grows in the South of India along with other hot and humid parts of Asia. Jute is related to hemp and a vast amount of this economical natural fibre is produced, second only to cotton! Exceptionally eco friendly, this fibre is used for an exhaustive amount of products along with of course carpeting.
Jute has become a favourite material over the centuries, used for a range of textile applications. Softened by pounding with wooden mallets before being dried in the sun, the fibres are then spun into a silky smooth delicate yarn. It comes in a selection of natural shades, feels like wool underfoot and is ideal where foot traffic is fairly light. Walking on Jute carpets is extremely comfortable for bare feet, which isn’t the case with every type of natural flooring.

Soft Natural Biodegradable & Recyclable Jute Carpet Fibres

Known as the ‘golden fibre’ jute is one of the most used natural fibres for various textile applications. Rated as ‘light domestic’ Jute comes in gorgeous neutral tones as with Ju-Tweed, Herringbone and Jhutex from Crucial Trading. There is also the stunning Jute Big Herringbone Bagel Carpet from Alternative Trading and a choice of stunning coloured Jute rug borders from Fibre Flooring.
Jute Carpet is a totally sustainable product, with plants only taking 4 to 6 months to grow, it is 100% biodegradable and recyclable. This ticks a lot of boxes especially with those wishing to buy responsibly.

Low Maintenance Luxury Underfoot for Bedrooms & Living Rooms

There are a number of advantages to choosing Jute for your home flooring apart from it’s rustic charm. Being completely natural, Jute is less likely to irritate the skin or cause allergic reactions as with some man made products. It’s softness means it can provide natural luxury in bedrooms and living rooms. It has an anti static nature, low thermal conductivity and limits noise transference. Another significant benefit to this option is the fact that it is fire resistant, and even if it catches fire it usually extinguishes quickly thanks to the natural oils present!

Like many natural carpet materials, Jute is not happy where there is moisture or humidity, so bathrooms and kitchens are probably not a good idea. Busy areas of high wear and tear such as hallways and stairs are also not the best places to apply this fibre.

The individual nature, appeal and green credentials of Jute carpeting will impress all visitors including those who are looking to buy your home. A low maintenance carpeting solution, Jute needs only an occasional run over with the vacuum. Any accumulated dirt and debris is camouflaged by the natural colour patterning. Avoid wetting or shampooing this carpeting for a long lasting result.
